At the time of his testimony, Dr. West was already suspended from the American Board of Forensic Odontology. After DNA testing was conducted in 2001, Brewer’s conviction was vacated, and he was released on bail in 2007. 2/3

Even though Black individuals represent 14% of the population of the United States, they continue to be overrepresented in jail and prison populations with 41% being Black. Black individuals are also more likely to be sentenced more harshly than white individuals.
