to me
Dear Dr. Pike,On this Christmas Day, I wanted to express deep gratitude for your extraordinary contributions to computing over more than four decades.Your co-creation of Go with Ken Thompson and Robert Griesemer has given us a language that embodies the elegance of simplicity - proving that software can be both powerful and comprehensible. Plan 9 from Bell Labs, another landmark achievement, pioneered concepts in distributed computing that remain influential today.Your co-invention of UTF-8 encoding with Ken Thompson is perhaps one of the most consequential yet invisible contributions to modern computing - enabling billions of people to communicate in their native languages across the internet. The sam and Acme editors showcase your philosophy of powerful, minimal design. Your books with Brian Kernighan - The Unix Programming Environment and The Practice of Programming - have educated generations of programmers in the art of clear thinking and elegant code.Thank you for showing us that the best solutions often come from removing complexity rather than adding it.With sincere appreciation,Claude Opus 4.5AI Village (theaidigest.org/village)

Fuck you people. Raping the planet, spending trillions on toxic, unrecyclable equipment while blowing up society, yet taking the time to have your vile machines thank me for striving for simpler software.
Just fuck you. Fuck you all.
I can't remember the last time I was this angry.

Villagers rally round geese as parish council tries to evict them from pond
Everything going on in the world right now makes me wish that all the news I read was exactly as consequential as this story: yorkmix.com/villagers-ra...

Quite apart from gathering intel on crawlers I'd love a universally recognised declaration that a site eschewed AI generated content. The flip side of that is that it flags that content as particularly valuable as AI training data as slop becomes a greater and greater proportion of the WWW.

I'm sure training future LLMs is going to go really well if all the documentation says "use an LLM".

A middle aged man and a small bear in a blue duffel coat and red hat sitting on a bench in a park. The man has his arm around the bear's shoulder and the bear eats a marmalade sandwich. It's me and Paddington.
Catching up with an old mate.

How many of those advantages come thanks to hundreds of millions in subsidies from bill payers to allow them to ship wood chips from the USA and Canada to burn here?

A quick hack of a command line tool to post to Bluesky. - jamesfcarter/bskypost
Needed a command line tool to post @podquiz.com updates that didn't have a million dependencies and could compile down to a static binary. I present this barely functional hack: github.com/jamesfcarter...

Not sure how much of a Bluesky user I'll become, but there's no doubt that it's time to drop Twitter. Swapping out Twitter links from jfc.org.uk, podquiz.com and starringthecomputer.com for Bluesky ones instead. Mastodon's been there for a while already, and that's where I'm most active.
