There are some striking similarities between the story of Tristram and Iseult and the Tale of Genji: both protagonists are quasi-royalty, both fall into forbidden love, both play a string instrument, both are caught in political intrigue, both are witty, etc. etc.

Some blingy books for world book day: A mid-15th century manuscript of Caesar's Gallic Wars, written on vellum, and that once belonged to the king of France; and our earliest printed book, the letters of Cicero to his friends printed on paper in 1472. Shiny! #WorldBookDay
Question 11 is poetic, but the answer is transmitted on the academic wavelength - until other stations interrupt it. Every Talis seeks its Qualis, while Joyce meets Proust, and Time drinks Space, wiping its whistle afterwards.
Our guest was once again @kenjihayakawa.com, bringing Hegelian gifts.

Some delightful snarkiness from 17th century advice column The Athenian Gazette: a reader asks why the authors answer silly questions. Answer: 'everyone who sends any question thinks both himself and his question as wise as he that sent this'

Fun fact 1: the name "Bashล" (i.e. of the well-known Japanese haiku poet) means "banana plant".
Fun fact 2: Sลseki Natsume, the early modern Japanese writer, used to have a row of basho's in the front garden of his residence in Waseda.

A woman with black hair, seated on a throne holding a book titled "The Sweets of Sin." Behind her is a black column labeled "M" and a white column labeled "B." Between the columns is a scroll of sheet music. At her feet are a black cat, a Plumtree's Potted Meat tub, and an orange-keyed chamber pot.
Hello listeners, normally we'd have a new episode out today, but it will be delayed for a week. Basically I had too much homework last week to record. Our Feb episodes will come out the last two weeks of the month. Enjoy Dermot's Molly Bloom tarot card in the mean time. -KB
Frosts and snows in Ukraine may feel like Biblical climate, not in terms of temperature but in terms of divine wrath. And yet narratives will be overridden and the snow will melt. With a little lore of love to live.

While my talk will be mostly about Finnegans Wake, I also believe that we need to have a broader conversation about how to navigate the tension in literature between accessibility and complexity.
