A page from Tom Gauld's Guardians of the Kingdom. A drawing of a wall snaking through the landscape is divided into 12 equally-sized rectangular panels. Two soldiers walk along the wall, having a conversation, dialogue as follows: "YOU KNOW SOMETHING FUNNY, I'VE FORGOTTEN WHICH SIDE IS WHICH" "YOU"VE WHAT?" "I'VE FORGOTTEN WHICH SIDE WE'RE SUPPOSED TO BE GUARDING FROM THE OTHER" "YOU FUCKING IDIOT. SOME SODIER ARE!" "WHICH IS IT THEN?" "TO OUR RIGHT WE HAVE OUR GLORIOUS HOMELAND AND TO OUR LEFT THE BARBARIC WASTES" "NOW?" "WHAT D'YOU MEAN 'NOW'? HOME IS ALWAYS ON MY RIGHT-HAND-SIDE I'VE MEMORISED IT." "IT CAN'T ALWAYS BE ON YOUR RIGHT BECAUSE IF YOU TURNED AROUND THEN YOUR RIGHT WOULD BE WHERE YOUR LEFT IS." "OH."
@tomgauld.bsky.social is such a master (and student) of the medium.
I've been using this page from Guardians of the Kingdom in comics making workshops for years and years to talk about how panels and gutters to create motion (and time!) on the static page.
A six panel comic of a man and a woman where their word balloons are actually other panels (there are no words) indicating future actions and explaining why they did what they did.
a three panel comic about SΓΈren Kierkegaard in which the text of the man reads backwards and the dog forwards "Life can only be understood backwards" and the dog "but it must be lived forwards"
It's that time in my Making comics intro course when I talk image-text relations, which gives me an excuse to share 2 favorite comics that do bewildering things that can only be done in comics! Ibn Al-Rabin's seminal Le Verbe ProphΓ©tique alongside the always brilliant @tomgauld.bsky.social. So good!
He had grown up in a country run by politicians who sent the pilots to man the bombers to kill the babies to make the world safe for children to grow up in.

Black and white photo of Marjane Satrapi with the quote: "The world is not divided between East and West. You are American. I am Iranian, we don't know each other, but we talk and we understand each other perfectly. The difference between you and your government is much bigger than the difference between you and me. And the difference between me and my government is much bigger than the difference between me and you. And our governments are very much the same."
Once again.
It's time! Nominations are now open for the 2026 Ursula K. Le Guin Prize for Fiction, which will be given to a work of imaginative fiction, published in 2025, that reflects the concepts and ideas that were central to Ursulaβs own work.

This duet cover of Radiohead's "Creep", between a son and his Shastriya Sangeet classically trained mother, is the mash-up I didn't know how much I needed in my life. Totally spontaneous sobbing may have taken place.

Love that AI, a thing we hate and donβt want, steals everything, ruins everything, shittifies everything. Drinks our water, plagiarizes our art, pisses all over our information fidelity, drives kids to suicide, serves the right-wing, and fucks up our devices and services. Good job, techbros!
DOGE allegedly used ChatGPT to identify 1,400 NEH grants it said were DEI. Grants were terminated April 2025, according to a court filing. E.g.
