Right, I know he didn't intent to say it, but I have no clue if he actually knows the cultural context of the word at all. That's what bothered me about his statement. Apologies aren't a confession of intent, nor is it something he'd have to do in perpetuity. We just need to to address the harm.

That's not remotely what I said though. It's specifically the n-word, and the cultural context that comes from it.

John's statement acknowledges the lack of intent, but not the harm, and that's problematic! Two black people still got called the n-word on TV, that's not just something we can ignore.

John's statement was focused on articulating his lack of intent rather than acknowledging the harm. He didn't acknowledge how the presenters must have felt as a result of the comment. While I sympathize with the frustration he must experience, I think in this case, we need to recognize the harm.

I'm not saying he should apologize for having tourettes.

An apology is not a confession of intent, it is a recognition that harm has been caused. And in this specific case, the harm of the n-word is not theoretical.

So, if John recognizes that the n-word is harmful, an apology seems appropriate.

Totally, censoring "free Palestine" but not the n-word is an appalling move, and I'm shocked that the BBC has done nothing to try to reconcile any of this.

Because I also don't want the burden placed one the black people that just have to take this so in stride without an apology.

It's not presumptuous to say that the n-word is harmful.

We're aligned in wanting better education about neurological conditions. I'm not demanding an apology over existence, but we have to acknowledge the harm, though unintentional, that was caused by the tic.

There's no answer, but I think this sort of response minimizes how harmful the n-word specifically is. Like, I promise it's more painful for a black man to hear the n-word than for a white guy to say it, even if he was "mortified" that he did. White people just act like it's not actually harmful.

The people saying "I stand with John Davidson" wouldn't be saying shit if he hadn't said the n-word and will I sympathize with his tourettes I feel like we're completely ignoring that fact.

I know it wasn't intentional, but man, you gotta apologize over harm, not intent.

It doesn’t matter if he has Tourette’s, and those excusing this are indicating they’re okay with having this slur used. The BAFTA’s also clearly found it more offensive for a Black man to say Free Palestine editing that out than for a white man with Tourette’s to use the n-word towards 2 Black men.

Obviously any black person getting called the n-word on television deserves an apology from someone, and it's a shame that grace was requested for the outburst, but no apology was given.
