This happens to be one of my favourite films. Lucas visited Trumbull on the set so borrowed the idea of multiple amputee actors operating the drones for R2D2 and also wanted Trumbull to do the VFX for Star Wars. He was busy working on Close Encounters so pointed to his assistant John Dykstra.
