I have been saving up bookstore credit for the #TransRightsReadathon, and a few of my orders came in this week!

Celestial Monsters by Aiden Thomas I have already read (from the library), but I picked it up to try to get my kids to read it. The rest are for my Readathon TBR!

No idea why it took me so long to get around to it, but I love all the things going on in this story!

#FridayReads The recently started book that I know I'm also going to be telling everyone about is The Shamshine Blind by @pazsays.bsky.social. It's a literally "noir" detective story in a world where color-based psychopigments are powerful drugs that control emotions, for good or for ill.

And a fun tidbit is that this book contains a minor character with my last name, which I don't think I've ever seen show up in fiction before!

#FridayReads My most recently finished read that I've been telling everybody about is The Death and Life of August Sweeney by @samuelashworth.bsky.social. A wonderfully written, constructed, and researched story!

This is an incredible team and project and I have never subscribed to anything so fast. Remember a few days ago when everyone was like "support independent media"?? Now is your chance to support and read really thoughtful writing about how culture workers live & make things in this economy.

There is breathtaking beauty in the world, along with all the ugliness.

A digital drawing of author Maia Kobabe, a white nonbinary person with short brown hair wearing a patterned blue shirt, who scowls while holding up a copy of eir book GENDER QUEER: A MEMOIR. Maia is saying: H.R. 7661 is a national book banning bill which seeks to remove any book that "involves gender dysphoria or transgenderism" from all public schools in the US. This would ban my books, and any other book with trans themes, from public schools. PLEASE call your House Reps and say: NO ON H.R. 7661!

FOUNDLING FATHERS by @megelison.bsky.social (6/23): From the author of the post-apocalyptic BOOK OF THE UNNAMED MIDWIFE and the intense real-world FIND LAYLA and NUMBER ONE FAN, it's... a scifi satire about an attempt to save America with clones of the founding fathers, of course! I can't wait.

WHISTLER by Ann Patchett (6/2): I always admire Patchett's complicated family relationships, so I'm excited to see what she'll do with the story of a woman who reconnects in middle age with the man who was her stepfather for only a brief part of her childhood.

RADIANT STAR by @annleckie.com (5/12): A standalone story in the Imperial Radch universe, featuring politics, religion, and characters from disparate backgrounds. The month of May is going to be amazing for space opera!

PLATFORM DECAY by @marthawells.com (5/5): Alert, alert, a new Murderbot Diary is approaching the perimeter! This gives me a deadline to finish rereading the adventures of our favorite Security Unit, who's great at its job but would rather be watching media than interacting with humans.

FIVE WEEKS IN THE COUNTRY by Francine Prose (5/5): An imagining of the real life episode when Hans Christian Andersen went to stay at Charles Dickens's home in what became a legendarily bad visit! Sounds like a ton of fun.

LAST NIGHT IN BROOKLYN by Xochitl Gonzalez (4/21): Both OLGA DIES DREAMING and ANITA DE MONTE LAUGHS LAST are fascinating stories that unfold the complex pasts of their characters. This time, a young woman in 2007 (historical fiction!) enters a world of wealth on the brink of the financial crisis.

CHERRY BABY by @rainbowrowell.bsky.social (4/14): Excited for another Rowell novel with adult characters! The premise involves a failing marriage and a successful webcomic that's getting a movie adaptation, and it's sure to be full of emotion and humor.

LAKE EFFECT by Cynthia D'Aprix Sweeney (3/3): I loved the complicated family and marriage dynamics in THE NEST and GOOD COMPANY. I'm expecting more excellent relationship drama in this new novel, which starts in 1977 with THE JOY OF SEX and an adulterous scandal that has long-ranging effects.
