After spending their first four draft picks of 2024 on two cornerbacks, an offensive tackle and a combination safety/running back, Detroit’s going into this offseason potentially needing a starting-caliber corner, a starting-caliber tackle, and now quality rotational/depth help at both safety and running back–and it’s not like there aren’t other short- and long-term needs, but the shopping list would be significantly shorter if they could count on Terrion Arnold, Ennis Rakestraw, Giovanni Manu or Sione Vaki to check any of those items off of it. Montgomery will make $6 million this year, the first of the two years added on with that 2024 extension. According to Over The Cap, that was set to be the 20th-highest cap number for any running back in the league–a huge amount to spend on a clear-cut No. 2 back who’ll turn 29 in June, on a team that’s technically over the 2026 cap number. Suddenly Montgomery looks like a fancy new fridge in a house with broken windows.
