If you use AI to design a board game, or do the artwork for your board game, I will never buy it, never play it, never review it, and I will side-eye your company for all future projects.
If you brag about doing it, you're a weapons grade douche bag, that doesn't deserve a place in our industry.
6. We have the bad habit of making our games way too complicated than they should be. I got a lot of huge rulebooks, with 20+ verbs and terms, for a lot of simple games that probably can be teached in 1/3 of those pages.
5. "Show, don't tell" needs to be more applied on pitch videos.
Instead of "easy to learn, hard to master, full of interesting moments and great decisions", just show me some of them happening and let me decide if they are interesting.
A lot of words felt way emptier than I expected.
4. Being more regional and specific can make a bland theme feels way more interesting, and even give you inspiration for new hooks and mechanisms.
Your game can be about "creating a medieval city" or about "recreating Carcassonne on France" and one of them is way more interesting than the other.
3. A lot of well-produced videos that didn't show me the core loop or why it's interesting.
Yes, we judge theme, but I don't need 2min of the whole lore of your characters to judge the theme.
(and if you need to explain each bit to make it stand out, it's probably a little generic from the start)
2. If your game is based a lot on components with actions, you should have them on your rulebook so I can understand the interactions you are proposing.
I've got a lot of games that could been fun, but it depends of assets that I didn't have access to look.
1. Almost no games felt broken, they probably would work, but so many of them were uninteresting or failed of showing how it stands out on the market.
Stronger hooks is totally something that can make you stand out on contests like this.
