My introduction to comics! I had a sister (ten years older) who had the annuals and before I could read, I was obsessed with Beryl. At that age I didn't even realise she was a girl and by the time I found out, Davy Law had already convinced me girls could do anything boys could do - possibly more!

Pre-internet, they had to build up a library of reference materials over many years, so these scale models must have been a life saver. Many comics I remember as a kid seemed set in a world of Victorian street furniture - they were still using the references they'd collected decades earlier!

Very much a product of it's time and a woman in space was beyond consideration no doubt. Who would make the tea? Hopefully some girls read this and thought, if she can roll in a Tadcaster, why can't I?

Another inspiring true life heroine story published in GIRL in 1959, this time Marie Carie and her discovery of Radium. Worth pointing out these stories weren't just a 4-6 page tributes, most ran for around 20 pages covering childhood to final days.

Wonderful color artist Tatjana Wood died 3 days shy of her 100th birthday… her work within the limited palette of four-color comics was always impressive and added mood. Important to remember as modern comics reprinting often relegates original coloring to the dustbin of history.

Onfim’s drawing of himself on horseback as a warrior defeating an enemy.

Onfim’s drawing of himself on horseback as a warrior defeating an enemy.

Two of Onfim’s works. On the left is a copy of a passage from the Book of Psalms he did for schoolwork. On the right is an apparently autobiographical depiction of a monster labeled with β€œI am a wild beast.”

Some more spelling practice by Onfim with some human figures who have round heads and varying numbers of fingers on their big hands.

Onfim’s writing practice accompanied by 7 little people in his particular drawing style, who tend to have very big hands with many fingers.

Nice AI-image-generating tool, but it will never be as great an artist as Onfim, a child who lived in the Novgorod Republic in the mid-1200s and who scribbled these drawings and schoolwork writings on birch bark at the age of 6 or 7.

Girl cover from 1961 by Philip Townsend. I've noticed in both Eagle and Girl that the artists would sometimes leave the backgrounds free from black line work on the colour pages which creates more depth and an almost 3D effect to the main subject.

Thanks! I wasn't sure about using such bright colours on what is supposed to be a night scene, but with all the SFX and the equal sized panels it just seemed to fit.

I'm sharing more Leslie Otway today and this is a page from Belle and Mamie published in Princess Magazine in 1965. I've seen a lot of impressive comic art over the years but something about Otway's ability to portray people touches me in a way few illustrators ever have.

Would you like more?

I wasn't familiar with Leslie Ottway's great art until I picked up some old Princess annuals in a charity shop last month and thanks to you, I now know his name. Lovely work!

Sir Ian McKellen performing a monologue from Shakespeare’s Sir Thomas More on the Stephen Colbert show. Never have I heard this monologue performed with such a keen sense of prescience. Nor have I ever been in this exact historical moment.TY Sir Ian, for reaching us once again.

Traitors Ireland now available on BBC. Two reasons I'm loving it so far:

1. Contestants have their own side challenge for who can drop the most F bombs.

2. Siobhan McSweeney.
