I'll own to taking perspicacious analysis from Charlie Jane for granted, but THIS really did focus some fuzzy thoughts I have about the artists who get to have a detachable oeuvre, who never will, and how that feeds into larger cultural deficits.
There's this specific kind of white resentment that comes out a lot in online spaces, where white people act like being racialized gives you a 'weapon' in arguments that they can never access or deploy except by proxy, and they get *really* weird about that perceived 'non-white privilege.'
What's scary about this story is the surveillance it hints at. This trans woman had changed her name, legally, but chose not to change her gender marker. She was apparently flagged in the DMV system as trans and her license was invalidated under a law that supposedly only concerned gender markers.
In less than one month, my best friend came out as gay and his family got ostracized at parish social events, the night before my Confirmation I confessed the sin of holding hate in my heart and the priest brushed it off, and the Boston Diocese child abuse scandal hit the news.
