Very cool!

Incident response & management+human factors in software development & operations. “How many incidents does it take to get to the center of a sociotechnical system?" (Yes, that @jpaulreed on The Old Bird Site/Mastodon)
Very cool!
Why is named after your great uncle?
If anyone is friends with any Georgian air traffic controllers, buy them a nice bottle of wine. As guardians of pretty much the only narrow gap still available between Europe and Asia that avoids both Iran, the Gulf, Ukraine and Russia, they are under some substantial pressure.
When someone says „Scientists do not want you to know“ you can dismiss everything from there on. Scientists want you to know. They are desperate that you know. They can’t shut up about what they found out and want you to know.
I see we've learned absolutely nothing from Star Trek IV.
You: fill up your car
Me: *chortles* it's priced-in
You: the price is going up because of the war
Me: dude it's priced-in
What IS becoming clearer to me: orgs that were already bad at this see AI as their savior in this arena, precisely because they were never good at it... and never cared to be.
As you point out, @niallm.bsky.social, unclear whether the outcomes will be better, but the sense of comfort absolutely is
Also, it's unclear to me how we're expecting engineers to know what they're supposed to ask these tools about these foreign systems.
Agree all around; I think there's an interesting contradiction around "You don't need to know everything (or even much of anything) about this code your LLM yeeted into production... except in high-tempo, high-consequence situations."
"llms can write social science articles better than professors now" BITCH I DONT CARE. i literally do not care because the point of people having fucking thoughts and doing research is PEOPLE HAVING THOUGHTS AND DOING RESEARCH. the point of the work is DOING THE FUCKING WORK.
Just wait until you’re staring at that code and asking yourself that question during an incident! 🎉🤪
if you love software and are feeling down about the state of software, find places where people are talking about building stuff, and most importantly, actually building stuff and talking about the specifics of the code
One of the ongoingly sad things about SF is it’s fairly easy to tell when the City has gone an unhoused encampment sweep, because you see new (often very emotionally distressed) people in your neighborhood.
(This is not a NIMBY observation, but rather a “We’re not solving anything”-observation…)
Dammit, I was hoping for a Heated Rivalry (“Wanted Rivalry?”) sort of a situation…
Someone tell Pam Bondi it's time to talk about the Epstein files. The Dow is under 50,000.
The Ford Pinto had a death rate of 85 people for 10 million cars sold. The Cybertruck hasn't sold 10 million, but the fatality rate so far maths out to 1,452 people killed per 10 million sold.
The Cybertruck may be the deadliest road car, for the occupants, ever sold.

"Reviewing Cold War-era CIA handbooks" was not on my Monday bingo card, but here we are...
I’d suggest one of the issues here is that AI implementation has not been an organic, bottom-up process. Since 2022, its boosters have been tech titans and media folks who got waaaaay ahead of the demand for this technology and began imposing the features and infrastructure on an unconvinced public.
OH: "Work as described-in-the-contract vs. work as performed."
The former is almost definitely "work as imagined."
Think it's a "Music to Refine To" afternoon...
Via an AI cocaine snorter "thought piece": "The first attempt might not be perfect. That's fine. Iterate. Rephrase what you asked. Give it more context. Try again. You might be shocked at what works."
So... you're asking us to actively train shitty models ourselves... in real time? And pay for it?
Nazi concentration camp prisoner population by year
ICE is currently holding around 80,000 detainees. Nazi Germany didn't reach this number in its formal camp system until 1942, nine years after seizing power and three years into the war.
always so funny to me when people are like “how am I supposed to explain Gay to my kids?” my kid asks me way harder shit all the time. “why did they build the road this way? why are some people bad?” I don’t know. please ask me about Gay
The average developer salary is my new GenAI signal. If it's really about developers leveraging AI and unlocking new value, then I expect salaries to increase.
If GenAI is about increasing profit margins, then I expect the average developer salary, and headcount, to decrease over time.
Were they?
To be fair, a lot of dystopian companies were just hawking their dystopian products.
WERE YOU NOT AMUSED?
Like this vibe of it’s okay if you aren’t fluent in the language, if you don’t know everyone here, if you aren’t familiar with the music, if you don’t know the steps of the dance. If you come with a good spirit and you embrace what you find here, you are very welcome to party with us
