Another day, another publication: Our new paper introduces a transformer-based approach to measure how parties talk about each other, capturing who talks about whom and with what stance, with applications to coalition signals in Germany and negative campaigning in Austria. Out now, open access!

Very happy to see our new article “Reference groups and electoral behavior” (coauthored with Rune Stubager, Christoffer Hentzer Dausgaard & Michael Lewis-Beck) published!

Using ANES, DNES and AUTNES data, we show that liking or disliking social groups shapes vote choice.

Not sure I’d wonder too hard… it will lead you to a deep and dark rabbit hole re: that argument you keep using, you’ve never read the actual work have you - about many many things…

So so tired of those takes. They usually come from people who are either not academics or from academics who for some reason don’t like writing. In my most frustrated moments I think that they should just make way for those of us early career who really really want to stay in academia ALSO to write.

I’ve become generally quite chill about my age bc what’s the point.

But you know what one shouldn’t do? Google the age of the tv characters you like, let alone that of the actors who play them.

Though the results of the later might explain why no one ever guessed my age correctly.

Problem about the loneliness epidemic is, it's everywhere except in representative survey data. Let's look at where the claim comes from. 1/

For some people, shouting "we don't want no Zionists here" is like "we don't want no fascists here". I can see their argument - terrible things were done in the name of Zionism.

But almost all Jews would hear "we don't want no Jews here". And they have good reason to fear this is the subtext.

For me this is very simple.

There is widespread, longstanding practice of using "Zionists" as coded slur for Jews, or "Jews I don't like" (regardless how they define themselves).

That is sufficient reason to refrain from broad-brush language such as "Zionism=Racism" or "Zionists not welcome".

5 hours at Schiphol it is!

On this lovely winter Saturday I will either make my tight connection back to Birmingham or (best case scenario) spend 5 hours at Schiphol airport waiting for the next flight. We are not even entertaining the possibility of not getting back today no matter how much I miss Amsterdam.

maybe its ok to assume that if I needed help getting *on* the airplane that I will need help getting *off* the airplane.

Or maybe I will someday stop feeling uncomfortable about needing help AND asking for it.

More than 10 years of flying with a (for the most part “invisible”) mobility restrictive disability and even with this broken foot, which is very visible, I’m still uncomfortable saying yes when asked “will you need assistance when we land as well?”
