Small addendum: If you are helping a newbie, and solve the issue with a command, don't leave it at that. Please explain what the command does. Maybe it wont matter much for you, but it may for someone else in a future- I've learned things like that, reading old support posts with explanations.

6/6 I love Linux. I think its a great system. Is it perfect? Hell no. It is also as good as the people willing to maintain it.

But for me one of the biggest downsides of Linux is... a lot of its fans.

And by the way, this is the same issue a lot of fandoms have. /end

5/6 Years ago Linux gurus used to tell newbies "rtfm" (read the fucking manual). It looks like "today experts" are desperate to prove they did rtfm and shoving that "knowledge" into the newbies who probably don't care or don't want to have to worry about that.

4/6 It's exhausting to try to show how easy to use the OS is and how diagnosing is not as terrible, just to have someone dig a hole under that, at best frustrating the new user, at worst scaring them back to Windows or whatever.

And it bothers me because it looks like an evolution of "rtfm".

3/6 Try the simplest approaches, solve things easily, show that the system is not the terrible thing a lot of newbies fear.

A large amount of Linux users go the opposite way: Trying the most convoluted complex weird solutions first. Why? I've no idea. But its mega overwhelming for a newbie.

2/6 My way to work is essentially, I take your hand. Let's try something very simple first. Maybe this simple command fixes it? If it does, great, I explain to you what happened. If it doesnt, okay, let's try this then. If it works, great, I explain, if it doesnt, okay this is weird, let's try this.

1/6 While I post a good lot about Linux, with tips and suggestions for the stuff I do, in general I avoid to give tech support for said OS, at least publicly. Why that? Because my way to work with an user is the complete opposite than what a lot of linux gurus actually want to do.

widget.non-native-theme.scrollbar.style has 5 potential values you can set to your liking.

0. Default style for your platform.
1. OSX style
2. GTK style
3. Android
4. Windows 10
5. Windows 11

I am now using option 2. You can also set ~.dark-themed to false.

During this trip I've noticed that I'm switching my usage of IM tools. Discord is now mainly for guilds and servers, for DMs I'm using Telegram a bit more than before.

It isnt cut-and-dry or black-and-white. Just a bit of a change in my overall usage. I still have plenty of people on Discord only.
