Content moderation tooling presents an entirely different collection of user interface and user experience challenges unlike any other software.
Design isn't for flair or optimising engagement but is instead about protecting.
I wrote about some considerations:

I only understand half of what osprey is, and it's one of the most impressive things I've seen recently.
I truly think this is a game changer for moderating content on the atmosphere and is such an amazing thing to have open sourced
@discord.com open sourced their internal T&S rules engine with @roost.tools!
Osprey handles ~400 million actions per day in production at Discord. If you run a Discord-sized (or smaller!) platform, you can just… use their rules engine because it’s open source.

Open sourcing Osprey was an adventure! @discord.com is now powered by the open source community version of Osprey. Read about how Osprey works and what makes a rules engine for fighting abuse powerful:

@dwillner.bsky.social and @samidh.bsky.social have released open models for online safety, pushed transparency with their model cards, and made it easier for teams to kickstart their safety work with their policy labeler library. We're excited that they're now integrated with our review tool, Coop!
@dwillner.bsky.social and I have spent years watching T&S teams rebuild the same infrastructure from scratch. This is what it looks like when open tools actually work together instead. Really proud of this one and appreciative of @roost.tools's leadership!
Details: blog.zentropi.ai/zentropi-now...
Zentropi is now integrated into Coop, @roost.tools's open source moderation platform. You can write a content policy in plain English on Zentropi, plug it into Coop as a signal, and have a moderation pipeline running in minutes.
(Also: if you're wrestling with these same trade-offs, come find us in Discord. You're not alone in this.)
When attacks are evolving faster than any one team can counter alone, transparency isn't optional. It's strategic. The full post digs into why we build in the open, what we're learning, and how collaboration across the ecosystem lifts all boats.
Our CTO Vinay Rao just wrote about the 6 hardest trade-offs in building safety infrastructure and why we think open source is the only way to navigate them. roost.tools/blog/buildin...
Every trust & safety team faces the same impossible choices: Do you optimize for flexibility or performance? Accessibility or expressiveness? Speed or confidence?
😊
Today is Safer Internet Day; a day for organizations, companies, schools, and communities to come together for a better internet. In the past year, I've come to believe that "together" can mean something different and powerful: building technology and making it free, easy to deploy, and in the open.
First community labeler taking actions on atproto using @roost.tools’s Osprey. entire Ozone and Osprey stack running on a $50/m OVH machine, with up to seven days of full firehose backfill for investigating patterns and exploring the network.
Osprey is a testament to how much impact we can create by sharing technology. @discord.com open sourced their internal rules engine through @roost.tools last year, working with us to generalize the core components so others can easily integrate it
Read our case study to see how open source infrastructure is changing the game for platform safety: roost.tools/blog/how-blu...
Here's what @bsky.app's Trust & Safety Engineering team had to say: "Really appreciate that it is horizontally scalable…[there were] no stability issues at all. It just runs."
At ROOST, we believe trust and safety shouldn’t be a cost center or a bottleneck.
Highlights from the case study:
✔️ 45M+ events processed daily.
✔️ 100k+ enforcement actions daily.
✔️ ~$70k/year saved in data storage costs alone.
How do you protect 39M users from AI-driven abuse?
We’ve just published a deep dive into how @bsky.app uses Osprey to handle the scale of the AT Protocol firehose.

Give it a watch to learn a bit about trust and safety and Osprey, our open source automated rules engine and investigation tool!
a screenshot of the Osprey demo showing a white web app that has 3 columns: a query column with a query of "PostContainsSpamLink == True"; a column of two time charts (by minutes and by hour); a column with an event stream of synthetic test data results matching the query
if you caught the @roost.tools talk at #FOSDEM and want to explore Osprey more, here's a codespace with about 14k test events to play with!

I had a great time at the Christchurch Call Foundation × @roost.tools brunch talking about Open Source and Online Safety with folks from across the ecosystem! You all had great insights. I look forward to continuing conversations about how to keep platforms and users safe with open source solutions.
Osprey is a new open source online safety tool designed to help teams:
- Translate their expertise to codified rules.
- Respond in near real-time to incidents and escalations.
- Scale to billions of events.
- Keep data private and self-hosted.
Why does open source safety infra matter? Because bad actors are already sharing tools & components. It’s time the defenders did, too.
Ystrdy, we launched Osprey V1.0, and we're doing a live demo at FOSDEM. Let us know if you’ll be there and say hi to @annebdh.bsky.social , @cassidyjames.com!
come find the ROOSTers at #FOSDEM!
getting to work on osprey a bit was really fun, and super happy to have gotten it in at bluesky. osprey opens up so much opportunity for the atproto ecosystem when it comes to not just moderation but also analytics, custom feed generation, and more. really hopeful that people start building with it!
Stop rebuilding safety tools from scratch. Automate the obvious and investigate the ambiguous with Osprey V1.0.
