People think that they are judging someone on „merit“ or „performance“ but if you aren’t even considering all the contributing factors that may affect your judgement (i.e. everything that is different and everything that is similar between the other person and you), you are not judging on „merit“.

Talk to people irl, even smart people, and you'll quickly find that the vast majority do not know that AI makes things up, or plagiarizes, or destroys the environment. Knowing the things about AI we take as given here is like knowing internet memes; people who aren't Very Online tend to have no clue
