The vortices are always there, it's just that we need high relative humidity to be able to see them through condensation. A vortex will usually spawn at the location of a discontinuity of spanwise loading at the wing, which can be the wingtip, the flap edge, or both simultaneously! π

Made my first trip up to Barnes Air National Guard Base recently. Didn't manage to capture any F-15s in flight, but did stop to admire this beautiful memorial display aircraft positioned at the front gate.
