But why am I willing to take so many steps to make the people on this site tolerable? I ask myself more and more. I feel insane even describing all the steps I’ve taken above

My normal system is I lock comments to followers or people who follow me, and I only get notifications for people who I follow (and I tend to follow back if I notice somebody follows me and is interacting even just occasionally). No push notifs except for DMs which only people I follow can send

If a post of mine (that I am not feeling sensitive about) starts getting mild to moderate traction I will often open the comments to be polite, which honestly makes me a dumbass

I don’t think so actually, because previous generations didn’t need to personally understand the mechanisms that cause vaccines to work, they trusted the recommendations of doctors who did.

I thought Grijalva announced he wasn’t running again when he got his diagnosis (could’ve just quit I guess but the special election cake was already baked). He was 77 though and admittedly that is past most people’s retirement age

Most of these people were not egregiously old tbh. One of them dropped dead of a freak aneurysm at 65

Antivaxxers are typically miscalculating the risk calculations that underwrite vaccines, but the fundamental calculation they’re making is “my kid should never encounter any risks for the benefit of other people in this world” and that’s the actual evil at work here

Really antivaxxers are doing a bad job of being *members of society*, I think that’s what we should focus on. It’s hard because as a culture we’ve abdicated all obligations to other people and imo that’s the root of this problem (and many more)

But not all parents are doing the right thing to keep their kids alive!

i don't think most anti-vaccine parents are bad parents. we are drowning in medical misinformation. it's really hard! and a lot of these parents are more accurately described as vaccine hesitant than ideologically opposed. they have good faith questions that deserve to be answered with compassion.

Parenting is not exactly a job, it’s also a relationship, which makes people hesitant to call people “bad” parents so long as they want their kids to live

And I think we haven’t really decided as a society whether this kind of place is supposed to replace a chat or a letter

I think this happens because it’s a normal part of spoken conversation (as a way of agreeing/emphasis/keeping the ball rolling) but then it looks kind of weird (and maybe annoying) when you see it written out
