1. Thread 🧡

Freedom of Movement wasn’t just a policy.
It was a simple freedom: the ability to say yes.

β€’ Yes to a job.
β€’ Yes to love.
β€’ Yes to a new life in another country.

When that freedom disappeared, something subtle but important changed.

Here are the objectives of the @180daysinspain.bsky.social campaign.

Our objectives for @savefom.bsky.social are much broader of course.

In Comms we call this the β€œWhat’s in it for me”. It’s always at the heart of winning support.

This is exactly why basing a campaign to rejoin the EU around the idea of rejoining the EU just doesn’t work.

03.03.2026 08:07 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 1 πŸ’¬ 2 πŸ“Œ 0

The reasons we joined the EU in the first place have not gone away. They just need rediscovering because people have forgotten why it happened.

I post communication frameworks that help political parties and campaign groups rejoin the EU. Follow me for more.

Thread on solving the 90-in-180 day problem 🧡

The solutions to the 90-in-180 day problem are many and varied. Politicians really have **no** excuse for inaction.

Any of the following provide models for solutions or are solutions in themselves…

One mention of the 90-in-180-day problem (at 16:55). But lots of talk about the loss of Freedom of Movement.

Thanks

Well done for organising such a great show of support.

We saw there were plenty of mentions of lost Freedom of Movement, a reference to the 90-in-180-day problem and several mentions of how an Irish passport solves mobility for Brits. …Bad luck though still for those without Irish/EU ancestry.

We’ve also asked supporters of our partner campaigns to write to their MPs this weekend and to tell them about how losing Freedom of Movement has affected them.

Delighted you are holding this debate.

The trolls complaining about our work promoting Freedom of Movement probably don’t realise there is a **very real risk** UK gov will succeed in getting a bespoke kind of EU membership or single market membership that explicitly excludes Freedom of Movement of People.

Why re-litigate the referendum?

Simple.

Because a number of fellow Europeans (inc oconghaile and crew) are obsessed by the idea that British people voted to harm and hurt other Europeans.

It’s not true.

And that idea is damaging to hopes of rejoining If it makes people think we are enemies.

Ever-increasing barriers on travel between UK and other European countries is bad for everyone.

We’re supposed to be going forward not backwards.

This is really sad 😒

Hey…. πŸ‘€ πŸ‘‡

12.02.2026 07:20 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

Freedom of Movement of people, goods, service and capital are certainly indivisible in the context of the single market.

But outside of that context, Freedom of Movement of people could certainly stand alone as a first step.

In fact, it does in Switzerland.

And between Ireland and UK too.

12.02.2026 00:33 πŸ‘ 5 πŸ” 6 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 1

The problem of course is that it’s Freedom of Movement **of people** that British politicians are so scared of.

Why are they scared?

Because they think YOU don’t want it and won’t accept it.

12.02.2026 00:35 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 3 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

It’s upside down thinking to think that Freedom of Movement of people comes **after** rejoining the EU.

It’s upside down because rejoining the EU isn’t even possible until UK is willing to accept Freedom of Movement of people.

12.02.2026 00:37 πŸ‘ 7 πŸ” 4 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 1

Obviously, what the UK should do is β€” irrespective of any other economic or institutional arrangement β€” agree with the EU to reintroduce FoM. This could be done very quickly and would have have substantial immediate benefits.

11.02.2026 09:38 πŸ‘ 73 πŸ” 8 πŸ’¬ 12 πŸ“Œ 3

This 100%

12.02.2026 01:23 πŸ‘ 3 πŸ” 2 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

Delighted people are catching on about Freedom of Movement being the way to unlock the Brexit impasse.

12.02.2026 01:26 πŸ‘ 4 πŸ” 2 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

People are waiting until we (eventually?!) rejoin the EU to get their Freedom of Movement back in Europe.

But that’s topsy turvy thinking.

Because we can’t rejoin the EU until we are prepared to rejoin the Single Market.

And that’s not possible until UK gov agrees to restore FOM.

12.02.2026 01:40 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 2 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

And that’s just one of the reasons Freedom of Movement was a good idea.
