Times are different. People find passion inspiring, not simple dignity. In this case, the theatrics signal that these Democrats are willing to stand up and resist—and that’s what their constituents need to see.
I’m just impressed that an early-career scientist leading a valiant effort to ensure the survival of the US scientific enterprise is also very well read on 18th-century French history. Another blow to the erroneous distinction between “techies” and “fuzzies.” (I really despise false dichotomies.)
You could reasonably argue that supporting a family in the US is by default affordable only with 2 incomes. The difference is that our poor childcare infrastructure deters that, which limits many families to a subsistence level of existence.
A colleague just went thru pre-check flying out of BWI and said there was no shut down of any lines.
Not to give your team more work after this excellent analysis, but it would be interesting to scale the bubbles based on % of the local population, not absolute crowd size. I’ll see if it’s possible to correlate the data with Census MSA pop data.

Absolutely. Our greatest deficit is a lack of imagination to diverge from what we’ve already done. A prominent research leader recently said something simple but profound: “If it happened, it must be possible.” We can’t imagine how we got here so we think that conventional solutions will suffice.
This is the toxic aspect of Democratic Senators voting to confirm Trump nominees because it’s “tradition” to accommodate their R colleagues. Once these nominees are confirmed, they’re free to move to other leadership positions in federal agencies with dire consequences.
Will be a big change for NSF if it becomes an advocate for students to abandon their formal studies.
2 big issues: 1 He was already Senate-confirmed for his HHS job, so he can run NSF in an acting capacity immediately and for a long time. 2 He ran the Thiel Foundation, whose signature program was to pay undergrads at top univs $200,000 to stop out and become entrepreneurs.

IIRC his first email at NIH was instructions to all staff on how they should format the signature block on all their emails. Notably, his signature block on the message didn’t conform to that format.
Thanks for the detailed reply. I appreciate what Stuart is trying to do but that post tried to twist reality to fit his poor analogy. And he side-stepped the blatant racism/sexism and geographic bias in how VC funding is allocated.
And EAGERs are now budgeted for up to $400k over 2 years. Plus there are a lot of other mechanisms, especially for younger faculty, that use VC-type selection criteria (based on the investigator’s perceived potential talent, not the project description) like CAREER.
By the way, if anyone wants the source data for Dr. Maldonado’s charts, see ncses.nsf.gov/data-collect.... They are from the NSF’s National Patterns of R&D Resources data release, the authoritative statistics on spending by sources of R&D funding.
The staffing shortage can be intentional as well. One way to strangle science is to cut decision-making capacity.

The $ figures are adjusted for inflation. BUT the type and structure of industry-funded science is very different from the federally-supported science. We need to understand what this means for the future of our research system.
Not sure how widely this point from @aaas.org President Maldonado is understood. The converging top lines are spending on basic research by the US gov’t and below it, industry. They are now equal, results of a trend over the last decade. #aaasmtg
