Surprising no one

And while they almost certainly aren't conscious now, I don't know of any reason to be certain that they or something like them couldn't later be, and if they one day are, I very much want to know that, so that we can do right by them like I think we should e.g., do right by all animals

I think neither of these, but I do think that despite everything, LLMs are strange and interesting and it's worthwhile to be curious about them.
