Washington water supply update

Warm weather resulting in a lack of snowpack means there’s still no end in sight to the ongoing drought, despite a wet winter.

Low snowpack across the state leaves us concerned about our water supply when itโs most needed in late spring, summer and early fall. Read more in our blog: ecology.wa.gov/blog/februar...

We had a lot of rain in December โ what about the reservoirs? Yakima's reservoirs are at 132% of average, which sounds encouraging. But the reservoirs hold 1M acre-feet of water, and the Yakima basin needs 2.5M acre-feet of water for irrigation and fisheries throughout the summer.

It would take a record-breaking amount of snow between now and April to get back to โnormalโ snowpack.
Our statewide snowpack is 52% of normal, but many of our water basins are as low as 35%. The average is being brought up by just a few "normal" basins in the Northern Cascade Mountains.

Itโs time for another Washington water supply update ๐ง No, thereโs still not enough snow. And yes, we're still in a drought.
So far, water year 2026 has been the warmest on record. We had a lot of rain in December, but January has been too warm and too dry to add to our snowpack.

EPA rescinds landmark 2009 'endangerment finding' on greenhouse gases' harmful effect on climate
The Trump administration is rescinding the Environmental Protection Agency's 2009 'endangerment finding' on greenhouse gases' environmental harm.
This federal action is unlawful, ignores basic science and denies what we can see with our own two eyes: Climate change endangers our communities and our health โ period.
From historic floods to devastating wildfires, Washingtonians have seen the impacts of the climate crisis firsthand.
