Climate TRACE 2025 annual emissions data are live.
β‘οΈGlobal emissions are still rising.
β‘οΈProven #climate solutions are making a difference in areas where adoption is high.
π Ex: Since 2015, road transportation emissions have declined 6.2% in the Nordics, where some 70% of new cars are electric.

The Scope 2 revolt at the GHG Protocol
Experts flag concerns over proposal to update guidance on carbon accounting methodologies
Greater accuracy β greater impact for emissions claims. Claims are what is said on paper, while impact is how the real world changes based on what is actually done. For Scope 2 emissions reporting, shouldn't climate impact be the bottom line?

Unfortunately, given the physical realities of power grid infrastructure, one cannot simply trace electrons from a single source to its destination. This problem is not new to the current GHGP Scope 2 debate β it has been understood for decades.

Navigating the Greenhouse Gas Protocolβs Scope 2 public comment period: What you need to know
Webinar recording from live session on December 5th, 2025. On October 20, The Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHGP) released once-in-a-decade proposed revisions to its Scope 2 accounting framework for public comment. These revised guidelines are expected to change not only how organizations report on their emissions, but also incentivize different procurement behaviors as companies attempt to reach ambitious clean energy and climate goals. The core GHGP Scope 2 proposal includes a local-only hourly matching requirement for inventory accounting, along with a separate proposal for voluntary consequential or impact accounting. Today, however, these proposed guidelines remain largely theoretical to most organizations. Stakeholders need a clear and comprehensive understanding of how GHGP Scope 2 changes will directly impact them, as well as how potential changes will impact grid decarbonization in the real world. WattTimeβs Gavin McCormick, Henry Richardson, and Chandni Sinha Das share an overview of the currently proposed GHGP Scope 2 accounting revisions and explain how they might affect companiesβ Scope 2 emissions totals, renewable energy procurement costs, real-world emissions impacts, and more. They ensure participants are equipped with the necessary information to engage meaningfully in the GHGP open comment period before it closes on January 31, 2025. But the future of this impactful trend is uncertain. With changes to the guidelines by which most companies account for their clean energy purchases underway, the market is poised for a shake-up.

Corporate clean energy procurement in the US alone has surpassed 130 GW, driving more than 40% of clean energy capacity additions to the US grid in the past decade.
One thing is clear: voluntary clean energy procurement is a major driving force of the energy transition.
