Cold Snow, warm sun and bright ideas: The first scientific picture of the New Year, captured by Franziska Ringleb (FMP Directorate).
New in PNAS: Tight junctions tune kidney Ca2+ flow. Using high‑res imaging, CLDN14 swaps in for CLDN16, breaks the CLDN16/19 pore, and lowers Ca2+ reabsorption.

Bettina Winckler (UVA) at the FMP
A fascinating seminar today with Prof. Bettina Winckler (UVA) at @fmp-berlin.de! She shared incredible insights into endosome trafficking in neurons. Thanks to ECN Berlin for funding our "Molecular Mechanisms of Neuronal Connectivity" series. @neurocure.bsky.social @einsteinberlin.bsky.social
May the (icy) force be with you ⚔️: This month's scientific picture comes from Abhirup Majumdar (Fiedler lab). This ice sculpture was formed at the base of a flask during an exothermic reaction at low temperatures 🧊. Great contribution!
New study by @noalipstein.bsky.social and Nils Brose, @mpi-nat.bsky.social links UNC13A gene variants to a new developmental disorder — offering insights into ALS and potential therapies. 👏

Congrats to Volker Haucke, Director at the Leibniz-FMP on being awarded the Ernst Schering Prize 2025 for his pioneering work on the function of signaling lipids that control how cells respond to hormones, nutrients and messengers.
🔥After years of hard work, it's finally out in @natchem.nature.com🔥 The Hackenberger group @fmp-berlin.de developed #🎯DarT-labeling, a #photocatalyticproximitylabeling method using deazaflavin - a ✅ biocompatible ✅ easily synthesized ✅ chemically benign #photocatalyst

Daniel Roderer and his group revealed the first high-res structure of Fap2 from Fusobacterium nucleatum (cryo-EM/ET). Fap2 binds immune cells (TIGIT) and colorectal cancer cells (Gal-GalNAc), showing how Fusobacteria colonize tumors and escape the immune system.
