This is a pretty weak defense on the behalf of a male academic who spent his whole life researching topics for his publications (or maybe it was actually his wife who was doing a lot of that work behind the scenes)?
Exploitation also comes to mind.
The scale of it is staggering and reflects the fact that this is the result of a network of so-called successful individuals all wheeling and dealing (doing favors for each other). It is organized sexual harassment.
