Please don't boycott OSS... Follow the authors, maintainers, and contributors to them, as many of them will continue to support their projects regardless of the company they go to. Also, if you can, sponsor these individuals too! Many of them have links for sponsorship on their Github profiles.
What happens to Square / Block Android OSS projects post layoffs?
Let's start with some context
OSS at Square is mostly a happy accident. Jack hired Bob, who's job was attracking world class engineers, and he did that through talks & OSS.
Thousands of good people were laid off by Block (Square and Cash App) today by their chickenshit leadership. Hire them, this is all Block's loss.
Jack Dorsey renamed the company to Block because he thought blockchains would be the future, in case you were wondering what his track record of predicting long-term tech trends is
Most of you have heard about Block's 40% layoffs by now, but the numbers are even worse. Engineering was hit harder, we've lost close to 70% of our engineers. Our leadership is plagued by false promises of "intelligence". The company you once knew as a prolific OSS contributor no longer exists.

If you are ex-Block and the company you are at is hiring, I encourage you share the career page.
For all my Block friends who were let go yesterday and/or are actively looking for another opportunity, Life360 is hiring across the board. www.life360.com/open-positions
π for all my ex colleagues at Square. You all made this place a wonderful place to work at β₯οΈ
I'm still there... Scratching my head, wondering how we can keep things up for our customers
Estimates are that 70% of Block engineering was laid off today.
What a day. I truly enjoyed working with some of the most talented people and will miss that part. It was awesome while it lasted.
Beer and anger do not mix....
To all my former co-workers at Block, I wish everyone all the happiness that you each can muster in this lifetime.
Worst case scenario, you've just hired some damn great people for your company. Reach out to these individuals.
Even if you don't touch those libraries directly, you may be using libraries, frameworks, and tools that do. This is the prime opportunity to find people who aren't just knowledgeable in many of these tools, but are maintainers and authors for them.
For anyone seeing the events that occurred at Block and think "man, I feel for them"... If you work in tech, it's gonna suck for you too. These are the people who maintained open source we all use, such as Okhttp, Retrofit, Okio, Turbine, Molecule, Paparazzi, Moshi, KotlinPoet, Java Poet, etc...
I suspect it will be a different watershed moment: Jack has just torpedoed Square and Cash App, and when real people start losing real money as a result this will become the horror story that people point to when warning of the limits of AI driven coding.
i dont know if its always been like this but among the elites theres just no sense of responsibility to be good stewards of the society thats given them everything
To my former colleagues who have been treated so shockingly badly today and for the last few months: Square/Block was the best job I ever had, with many of the best people I ever worked with. None of you deserve to be dicked around like this.
It's not you, it's Jack.
Hi friends I just got laid off along with 40% of Block. No idea what comes next, but if you have need for a Principal Frontend Engineer hit me up!
Almost all of Cash Mobile Engineering was laid off today.
None of us have any clue what their rubric was for choosing who stayed and who went, but whatever it was, I'm on the job market again!

Thanks @mbonnin.net for making me realize I never posted the AGP 9 tracker on Bluesky.
