I imagine kids did have cuddly toys from hides, but I've never heard of any evidence for it. I'm still fascinated by the Pazyryk Swans but they seem to have a decorative role rather than a play thing.

I'm planning a "shark drop" today or tomorrow (sharks and eagle rays) and assorted marine reptiles will be coming in a few weeks, my sister is working on those. I also have two new salamanders in the works

Today I visited Zealandia and of course asked about the chance of seeing the resident takahē.

Basically no chance, my guide replied. Their habitat is off-limited to visitors right now and they rarely venture beyond it.

Resigned to this, I sat down on bench to watch riflemen...and who peeked out?
