Not at all. San Diego drivers refuse to pay their fair share as we saw with the freeway usage fee. It makes it all the more enraging when they bring up the cost of bike lanes at every turn. Bike lanes which are < 1% the cost of the car infrastructure. Car infra which is subsidized by non-drivers.
These authors reviewed 73 previous studies examining car touchscreens.
Conclusion: They're awful
"Touchscreens tended to have negative effects on driving performance, visual attention, and secondary task performance compared with voice control and physical controls."

On a cheery pink background, the line: "this Purim I'm going to get so drunk that I can't tell the right-wing antisemites from the left-wing antisemites".
a (Jewish) friend just sent this to me and it has made me laugh and laugh and laugh. Happy Purim everyone!

If we cross paths at #AWP26, Iβd love to catch a portrait of you!
Text explaining how there isnβt a war on cars, with all the benefits of reallocating street space to move a lot more people with a lot less space and other consequences, including life and death, pollution/emissions, public and personal costs, etc. Providing more choices works better for everyone, including drivers. And more transportation choices support the economic competitiveness of cities, as smart cities know.
Iβm not a fan of politicians trying to make people angry for votes by claiming there actually IS a βwar on carsβ (there isnβt β if anything thereβs been a war on every OTHER way of getting around since the 1960s).
A politician just made the claim on LinkedIn. Hereβs the reply I posted. #UrbanTruth

Is it too late to make #awp26 lit purely by sky light and floor lamps?
Weβre at about 20 years since my first AWP, and, as usual Iβm excited to see friends, discover new presses, learn a few things at panels, and be in love with the community brought together by getting collectively washed out under florescent lights.

βNew research from @cathywu.bsky.social et al. confirms something I've long suspected:
Navigation apps could save their users a lot of time β and tilt travel decisions toward transit and biking β if they showed users how long it takes to find parking.
The idea that someone who gets around with a $2000 piece of equipment is "elitist" while someone who uses a $30,000+ piece of equipment that costs hundreds of dollars per month to operate is "normal" is quite the brainwashing.
Got a bunch of cameras from a neighbor who's now passed, none super impressive, and now have to make serious calculations about much it's worth to make fun little old machines work again.
It's almost as if driving might not be the best way to get around the city.
βAre they really going to make people pay the meter in front of their home all day?β she asked. βThis is crazy.β
That space belongs to the city, not to whoever is living next to it. If you want a place to store your car, pay for it or be willing to walk to someplace where there's no parking fee.
Great dad joke!
They love their cars more than people.
Terrible. The bill now goes to the Senate. Make those calls. 202-224-3121

Burgum isn't stupid. He's a liar. A barrel of oil in a suit and tie.
I will see you in the fluorescent lights that bleach all our good sides!
If public transit and cycling had even 10% of the subsidies we give to car culture, our cities would look completely different.
One problem with academic conferences is that rooms where panels take place are usually interior design nightmares, and are lousy backgrounds for photographs.
SAN DIEGO SHOWED UP AND TOOK OVER THE STREETS OF NORTH PARK IN MEMORY OF ALEX PRETTI!!!
ABOLISH ICE!
Anyone who gives a dime to the Democratic Party right now is a fucking chump.
How much public money was wasted by backtracking on this? Itβs cowardice, and capitulation to drivers, already the most subsidized people in our society.
And having free parking wonβt move them to vote to fund better transit. Theyβll just complain about it while they circle for parking.
*Disappointing. Drivers are cry babies.
Disappoint, but not at all surprising.
Pretty disappointed by this.
1. It reduces funding for the park
2. It subsidizes driving, counter to our climate goals
3. It will exacerbate car traffic around the park, thereby worsening the traffic safety crisis
4. It is not equitable for driving to be free while transit is not
5. Park air quality
