I think the plan was for him to retire Cope and became the heir of the ultimate opportunist. Cope like Punk was a big fan of Jay's work (Jay gets a lot of wrestler's favorite wrestler because of how good/safe he is)

How I'd do it- Have Hangman decide he will surpass the AEW World Championship by making his own with the ROH, Continental, and perhaps either Intl or National into a Triple Crown, and have that main event over the AEW belt, driving the AEW Champ insane and leading to them challenging Hangman.

The Mox stuff is G1 match in NJPW, and C2 in the US, and also some feuding during the Death rider arc (with Hangman and Swerve also involved)
Jays injury is kayfabe due to Death riders (and Knight got his place in the C2 due to it)

The AEW belt isn't the only world championship recognized by AEW. There's also ROH, IWGP, CMLL. CMLL wants Hangman dates. I could see a scenaio or ten to get around the stip.

I don't think anyone's gonna be too upset if Hangman wins the belt.
The stip was unnecesarrily overkill unless they got some crazy long-term plan for Hangman like him unifying all the other belts into a new world title.

Jay was a good babyface in ROH. Jay's best AEW work has been vs Hangman, Mox, and FTR I think. Hangman-Jay is always great chemistry, FTR vs JayJuice were AEW's best tag matches, and Jay/Mox have a great dynamic. Jay/Swerve does as well but only one NJPW and one AEW C2 match.

I think he had it right before he got hurt. I think in AEW he works best as a Bret-style character who wins with guile and skill. He's a great foil to Swerve, Mox, and Hangman that way, as he wants to win matches not destroy folks into atoms. Be interesting to see him interact with DCF guys.

This led to Jay carrying Punk's X belt for a couple of months, and having great matches and clowning luchadors on Collision with it. (Punk loved lucha so he pushed for luchadors on Collision too, not just the Bang Bang Gang and his disciples)

A lot of the CM Punk bullshit that happened hurt Jay's AEW career by proxy combined with some bad luck- the MJF PPV match especially was due to this. Jay and Punk were supposed to have a big feud as well that got pulled due to Brawl Out stuff.

from Jay's backstory and my knowledge of some interactions- he was fed-pilled as a kid, but he's Maes Hughes IRL- his wife comes first in all his decisions, and he views wrestling as a business totally. Really nice guy, but all business until its home time, then totally sweet family man.

I do think this is what happened, and AEW lucked out. I was going to be mega agonized if Jay went to WWE, so I'm so glad he didn't. Hopefully he stays in AEW for a long long time.

Superstars/world-class level talent like Jay always get signed, and Jay's character was well known. Jay's also been great in AEW despite some booking missteps.

I would argue Mariah was used well. It depends on the character of the wrestler I think- I feel pretty solid that Finlay will be useful to AEW, he's not Rusev.

AEW didn't have to take him- they did want him. Finlay is now very good and has history with some of the roster already (Jay and Juice especially)

At this point she's going to be the vet who puts over talent ready for the top, and likely mentoring. Kinda the Nyla Rose/Emi Sakura role.

Njpw also benefitted hard from underpayment of wrestlers due to wwe monopoly. Aew took that away from a lot of folks
