Both issues are now resolved. Automated rules are re-enabled, and systems are operating normally. We’re reviewing additional safeguards to reduce the risk of similar issues in the future. 5/5
The issue stemmed from a connector between our moderation tool and automation system. After a restart, it failed to resume from the correct point and replayed past events - as far back as 2024. 4/5
Once confirmed, we disabled the affected automated rules and began a root cause analysis. Engineering fixed the issue, and we removed all incorrect labels within two hours from detection. No accounts were suspended or taken down due to this error. 3/5
A system failure caused older moderation events to be reprocessed as if they were new. This triggered account-level review labels, even though no recent activity had occurred. We identified this after investigating a user report. 2/5
Incident report: Earlier this week, our automated moderation system incorrectly labeled ~32,000 accounts as requiring moderator review. Here’s what happened, what we fixed, and the current status. 1/5
An error caused a large number of accounts to be incorrectly "marked for review" by our automated system. This tool is normally used to rapidly respond to mass harassment and spam campaigns. We have removed the incorrect labels and will publish an incident report in the coming days.
We apologize for the brief suspension of @dril.bsky.social. While our automoderation tool correctly identified that he 'knew too much,' we regret the error.
In 2025, as Bluesky grew from 25M to 42M users, we took actions to keep it welcoming, using proactive design to reduce toxic content by 79%. Our 2025 Transparency Report shares how we're building a safer platform while keeping a transparent and human-centered approach: bsky.social/about/blog/0...
Screenshot of the Bluesky web app’s Moderation settings page. It shows content filters with an “Enable adult content” toggle turned on, and multiple categories—Adult Content, Sexually Suggestive, Graphic Media, and Non-sexual Nudity—each with options to Show, Warn (selected), or Hide. Below is an “Advanced” section with the official Bluesky Moderation Service and additional labels that can be toggled.
For each label, you can choose whether content is shown, shown with a warning, or hidden by default.
To turn on graphic content, you’d first have to enable adult content. There are additional settings in the Bluesky Moderation Service for advanced labels. 2/2
If you want to change Bluesky’s default moderation settings, go to your moderation settings on the web - bsky.app/moderation. Apple limits adult-content controls inside iOS apps, so you won’t see those options on the iPhone app itself. 1/2
This partnership puts more safety tools in your hands to control your online experience. Your content stays private while we work to prevent harmful sharing across multiple platforms. Learn more at StopNCII.org 4/4
When we detect a new match to these fingerprints, our moderators review and block the content before it appears online. You can create hashes directly through StopNCII.org. Alternatively - report NCII through our in-app reporting under Adult Content > Non-Consensual Intimate Imagery. 3/4
How it works: StopNCII.org uses privacy-preserving technology to create digital "fingerprints" of your intimate content directly on your device. Your images never leave your device, but the fingerprints are shared with participating platforms like Meta, TikTok, and now Bluesky. 2/4
We're announcing a new partnership with StopNCII.org to prevent non-consensual intimate imagery (NCII) from spreading on Bluesky. While NCII hasn't been frequent on our platform, these incidents are devastating for victims and preventing them is a top safety priority. 1/4

9/10
💡 STAY ALERT - Social engineering attacks are getting sophisticated. Be skeptical of urgent requests, verification promises, or threats about account suspension—especially in DMs. 8/10
🎣 RECOGNIZE PHISHING - Scammers often impersonate Bluesky staff. Our accounts have blue verification checkmarks—if an account looks like Bluesky but lacks the checkmark, it's not official. When in doubt, don't engage. 7/10
🚨 MODERATION SCAM WARNING - DMs about account violations or moderation issues are scams. We don't handle moderation via DMs/external sites and would NEVER ask for your password, payment, or credit card details regarding moderation decisions. 6/10
⚠️ VERIFICATION SCAM WARNING - We will NEVER DM you about account verification. Messages from "Bluesky staff" or services offering to get your account verified through DMs are scams. Report and block immediately. 5/10
🔑 CHECK YOUR APP PASSWORDS - Regularly review your app passwords in Settings > Privacy and Security > App Passwords. Delete any you don't recognize or no longer use. For apps you do use, verify they're working as expected. 4/10
🛡️ ENABLE 2FA - Add an extra security layer via Settings > Privacy and Security > Enable 2FA. While Bluesky 2FA helps protect your account, make sure your email also has 2FA enabled for maximum protection. 3/10
✅ USE STRONG PASSWORDS - Create unique, complex passwords for Bluesky. Never reuse passwords from other sites. Consider using a password manager to generate and store secure passwords safely. 2/10
