Most people see BBC iPlayer or similar and use that over Freeview for convenience (or might not have even plugged in their TV aerial!), I suspect that’s what they’re trying to say. The solution of course is to tell your mates to plug their aerials in and use Freeview again, but that’s not as fun :D
I would imagine they mean they’re using Freeview (DVB-T/DVB-T2) which is near instant versus BBC iPlayer/Freely (“Freeview over IP”) which has inherent delays compared to terrestrial broadcast
