So we end up in these offside debates every week for these toenail calls, with everyone lamenting them. Why? Because we all know that the toenail isn't an advantage, and the rule was never really meant for this level of precision. So our options are to change VAR or modify the rule.
I don't think that anyone would argue that toenail infractions are actually advantageous to the attacker, because they aren't. However, that's the reality under the current rule and its implementation. The window for deference to the referee is practically nothing, especially in the age of VAR.
Under the proposal, for an infraction, the attacker's offside position is more advantageous compared to the current rule, right? This, therefore, allows for more deference to the referee in making the call compared to current rule, because the attacking player is clearly gaining an advantage.
I agree it needs to work without VAR, and as someone who reffed for awhile... It wouldn't be any more difficult than it is now. Again, this is primarily about determining if the attacking player has gained an undue advantage with their position, right? And if they have - whistle. If not, play on?
