I've had the privilege of working directly with @padilla.senate.gov and his staff on environmental protections, on internet and tech policy, and other issues. I know first hand that he is one of the good guys, watching him get tackled and restrained while doing his job for his voters is horrifying.

The Trump Administration has yet to make a decision on the #ChuckwallaNationalMonument. But one thing is certain: if the designation is rescinded, we’ll fight like hell to defend it.

This is where I work. We're looking for new Flickr Commons members, preferably in the places where we don't have members already. Do you know someone and could you put me in touch? Thank you.

I also met again with @repgabevasquez.bsky.social to support the critical #publiclands projects he is sponsoring and championing.

I can't say enough good things about Congressman Vasquez and the work he is doing to protect our landscapes and provide community access.

In DC today, working on #publiclands with some of the best Congress Reps we have.

I finally got to show @repraulruizmd.bsky.social my Chuckwalla National Monument tattoo, celebrating the amazing work he's done getting it designated.

He's a true champion, there are good people fighting for us.

Protect Alaska's Wildlands

And yet here we are again. They are under threat of tremendously destructive industrial expansion.

So we're back at it. Watch our newest short film:

Alaska is a place where we can still get it right.

And it all worked! The surveys were completed, the protections were restored. Cheers were had, happy tears were shed. What a tremendous victory.

28 million acres! That's about the size of Pennsylvania!

This is a campaign we've worked on for years.

For almost 60 years, these lands have had successful management and protection. Those protections were stripped away little over 4 years ago. We worked closely with the DOI to advocate for environmental surveys, and restored protections.

Today we've (re)launched a campaign to protect 28 Million acres in Alaska, a partnership with Flickr, The Conservation Alliance, SalmonState, and Wild Salmon Center.

Read more about what we're working on, and watch our short film here:

I'll add some context in thread.

The 2024 Year in Review | Flickr A look back at the highlights, insights, and trends in the world of photography in 2024.

It was good year over on Flickr. Check out the fun review: www.flickr.com/year-in-revi...

Most surprising to me? Mammoth Cave National Park was the top National Park this year. It wasn't even on my radar before, time to go down a wikipedia rabbit hole!

And one last amazing shout out for the people in the administration you've never heard of, the ones who are making this all happen without the glory or the fanfare. 😍

Okay, after last week's weather disaster in SoCal, I finally got to show my Chuckwalla tattoo and celebrate the new National Monument. Starting with the President Biden photo from tonight, because he's protected more of our public land and water than ANY other president in history.

We're also pretty fierce defenders of the older and more open internet. So with decentralization, I'd rather be an amazing community of photographers that works with the other broader communities. I don't want to lock every single person into our community like instagram. 🀷

11.01.2025 22:06 πŸ‘ 2 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

but I don't think we're really an instagram replacement, and I don't think we want to be.

We'll always be somewhat niche. I don't think there are billions of people who love photography, and sharing that art. We've proven there are tens of millions, maybe hundreds. I'm okay with that.

If you love taking photos for the sake of taking and sharing photos, Flickr is a wonderful place. We're healthy, growing, and still beloved by the community.

We're also 1% For the Planet, Change Climate Certified, certified Great Place to Work, Certified Evergreen, all the cool stuff.

I see a lot of Flickr chatter in the wake of Meta news.

Obviously we'd love to welcome photographers to the community. We're not Instagram though, and don't want to be. We're not looking for gym selfies and influencer lifestyles.

We build for people who love photography. (more)

I have a few connections. πŸ˜†

It’s 1000 photos free at the free tier, which we can definitely debate. But I am a strong advocate for privacy, and hate heavy handed advertising. So I don’t see a dramatic shift in business model happening. Flickr is mildly profitable, sustainable for ever, and growing.

11.01.2025 21:58 πŸ‘ 3 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

but that might be the end of the POTUS account on Flickr? At least for now. 🀷

11.01.2025 01:07 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

I probably shouldn't say this publicly, but I don't think the incoming administration has asked about migrating the POTUS account?

We transitioned to and from the last Trump administration, so we'd obviously be happy to help them share their photography. The public record is important.

Thanks for the page! This is WAY more productive paging @don.flickr . I mean, I'm familiar with it... but he's.... intimate(?) with it.

I will say, there have been some internal hackathons with ActivityPub. I'm less familiar with atproto, which is why I'm using my lifeline to call a friend.
