Ultimately though, writing software is similar to writing English - you need to read a lot, and write a lot in order to develop taste about what works and what doesn't. Will developers be able to develop good taste via prompting and not writing? (Or worse, will it cease to matter?)

Post-Copliot (autocomplete) but pre-Claude Code I interviewed plenty of engineers who struggled to write what should have been their bread and butter work.

I've worked with a couple pre-LLMs, they might take weeks to deliver something that a better colleague could deliver in an afternoon. These weren't juniors, but could have more than 10 years of experience. Post-LLMs I've only had one team of good people, so I can't compare.
