We face two urgent challenges concerning consciousness and AI. Challenge One is that millions of users will soon misattribute human-like consciousness to AI friends, partners, and assistants on the basis of mimicry and role-play, and we don’t know how to prevent this. Challenge Two is that profoundly alien forms of consciousness might genuinely be achieved in AI, but our theoretical understanding of consciousness is too immature to provide confident answers one way or the other. Centrism about AI consciousness is the position that we must take both challenges seriously. The two challenges interact in ways that make this difficult. Steps to address Challenge One might undermine attempts to address Challenge Two by portraying the idea of conscious AI as impossible or inherently unlikely. Conversely, attempts to address Challenge Two might lead to higher levels of misattribution from ordinary users. This “manifesto” attempts to construct mutually consistent strategies for addressing both challenges.

So many issues are caused capitalism, big one is. Those that are so consumed by capitalism and greed they no longer feel part of a culture or community are terrified of the immigrants who still have these things. There are terrified of loosing what little identity they have left.

My dream is. With cheaper dev comes nicer apps. Due to less need to always make all the money to cover huge costs which drives the enshitification.

I imagine we will actually see in increase in apps with what people want.
Making quick versions to test becomes easier.
Plus as above. The ‘should you do it’ or ‘will it enable more enshitification’ can have more time spent in consideration.

To think. This will be too nuanced and the efforts to point out inconsistencies missed by many.

Strongly recommend this excellent piece. It actually understates the US failure: Brazil and S. Korea aren’t outliers. Quite the opposite. Since 2010, 31 democracies have convicted or banned leaders from office. Accountability is the democratic norm. America is the sole outlier.
