The summer course line-up this year will give an incredible array of tools to scientists in training! (Especially if you take more than one 👀)
Restoration efforts require interdisciplinary approaches, and genomics can fill in gaps in understanding kelp biodiversity and resilience. As Dr. Jasmin Schuster puts it, “Restoration isn’t just about replacing what’s lost. We need to rebuild kelp forests that can thrive in tomorrow’s oceans.”
BMSC hosts many interdisciplinary courses offering #experientiallearning to students from science, to art, law, and more.
Check out this feature from @ualbertalaw.bsky.social that highlights their Ocean Law and Policy course that happens at our station!

The dolphins were scouting out the salmon, Dr. Andrew Trites said. “They were sort of spread out and pinging through the water in a much broader area than what the whales can search — and the whale was listening.” www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...
Canada + Chile = a new era of Pacific Rim #ocean #science!
The PMSA and the Océanos Institute signed an agreement to expand joint research + training across the #Pacific, #Arctic, and #Antarctic. The partnership is supported by PRISMS (@ubcprisms.bsky.social), a PMSA–MEOPAR collab.

The PMSA is the governing body of BMSC and has various initiatives focused on advancing marine science, improving ocean sustainability, and cultivating the ocean leaders of tomorrow. Want to learn more? Go to www.pacificmsa.ca
The PMSA, previously WCUMSS, is a not-for-profit, registered Canadian charity representing UCalgary, UofA, UVic, UBC, & SFU.
PMSA fosters national and international collaboration to advance marine and coastal #research, #education, and #sustainability.
BMSC is PMSA’s Marine Station!
Each #kelp population carries its own genetic mix shaped by local conditions. When forests shrink or become isolated they can lose diversity, slowing recovery. Our research shows mixing individuals from different regions may support resilience. Dive deeper: kelprescue.org/publications
Even though BMSC has operated for more than 50 years, this is our very first Bluesky post!
We are excited to say hello to the #science #ocean #education #conservation and #research communities here and can not wait to connect with all of you!
