A great feature when using Matrix: there's a setting that only allows users who you have manually verified (preferably face to face, scanning each other's QR codes) to see your encrypted messages in a group chat. Way to go @matrix.org!

the thing which determines the resource usage is the size of the rooms the server joins. if one of your users joins a big public chatroom with 100k users in it then that will start chewing ram, bandwidth and db. if the 12 users only talk to combinations of each other then it will be tiny resources.
