honestly looking at the roster, they've done a better job of picking speakers who are actually relevant to sports analytics than previous years, but the biggest indicator of "are you actually serious about sports analytics" is "did you invite nate silver to speak". the correct answer is "we didn't"

but i find it annoying and deceptive that people (usually people directly connected to sloan) continue to promote it as some premiere sports analytics conference, which deceives young professionals into spending far too much for tickets that aren't worth the paper they're printed on

there seems to be a lot of buzz for sloan from people who aren't actually into sports analytics, and i think that's fair, given that sloan isn't a sports analytics conference and hasn't been for years

if i had to guess, prediction markets don't give you true "wisdom of the crowd" insights because they tell you what the "crowd" is already saying and this pushes you in a particular direction. i'd guess true "wotc" looks like blind probabilistic estimates of outcomes, unblemished by previous action

the whole polymarket + kalshi etc. experience has really forced us to examine how well "wisdom of the crowds" scales when applied to basically everything under the sun

anecdotally, the returns don't seem great!
