Across Canada. And in my own life.
My mom, a teacher who raised me to believe in equality and fairness.
And my wife, I honestly don’t know how she does everything and she does it all so very well. We are lucky to have her.
Across Canada. And in my own life.
My mom, a teacher who raised me to believe in equality and fairness.
And my wife, I honestly don’t know how she does everything and she does it all so very well. We are lucky to have her.
This short list misses so many impactful women because that’s the point: there are so many impactful women.
There’s equality in the Senate and cabinet now, though women represent 30% of the House.
It’s major progress from when Agnes Macphail became the first elected woman MP in 1921, but still a work in progress.
With the by-elections now called for April 13, community champion Doly Begum and the incomparable healthcare advocate Dr. Danielle Martin will hopefully soon join the House of Commons too.
Katie Telford, meanwhile, has brought countless women into politics and the Liberal Party wouldn't be the same without her.
Staff shape teams and governments too, of course.
Supriya Dwivedi is someone who works with the team and will also consistently call it like it is.
And former colleague Catherine McKenna continues to call for strong climate policy and encourages young women to run for something.
Federally, there are too many to name, but colleague Hedy Fry is the longest serving female MP in Canada’s history and her public health work is outstanding.
I’ve been lucky to serve alongside MMM since 2015, and she is non-stop working for our east end.
She's one of a strong team of women at Queen’s Park.
From competition and consumer protection, to affordable housing, access to primary care, child care, and children’s and disability benefits.
There are also so many elected representatives, past and present.
And there are really just too many brilliant policy minds - Vass Bednar, Jennifer Robson, Armine Yalnizyan, Sheri Torjman, Tara Kiran, Carolyn Whitzman - and so many more. Not only with policy smarts, but a record of impacting decision-making.
Online, Sam Turnbull makes healthy eating accessible and neuroscientist Science Sam makes science accessible when we’ve never needed it more.
Influencers in the best way.
Award winning author Tanya Talaga has opened so many eyes to truth and reconciliation, from Seven Fallen Feathers to the Knowing.
She's also generous with her time, twice joining us for local events.
Annamaria Enenajor is an effective criminal defence lawyer and advocate for justice reform, including cannabis amnesty (which is how we got to know one another).
Helena Kirk is a survivor of childhood cancer and she was a tireless advocate when we worked to secure $30 million for pediatric cancer support and research.
International Women’s Day is a good opportunity to think about the progress towards equality and to highlight women who are making a difference.
Here are some amazing women who I’ve been lucky to work with or get to know in one way or another over the years.

And that change starts here in our shared east end.
Thank you to everyone who has been part of our east end team over the years. Now let’s build a better province together.
There’s no question that the biggest opportunity to make a difference right now is at Queen’s Park, rebuilding our politics and province.
Ontario is overpriced and mismanaged, and we deserve smart, fair and honest leadership instead of Ford’s incompetence and self-dealing.
It’s been a real privilege to represent BEY in Parliament.
Thanks to your support here at home, I’ve been able to do politics differently in Ottawa. And we’ve been able to make a real difference for our community and country.
If we win the nomination, we have a great opportunity to win the by-election and then the leadership.
Having a seat in the legislature is important to hold Ford accountable and to show Ontarians what we’ve been able to show our east end community these last 10 years.
If you live in the riding, register at teamnate.ca/ssw
And spread the word no matter where you live. Get your friends and family who live in riding registered. It’s grassroots politics that wins.
You can vote in the nomination race if you live in SSW and have registered as a member.
The boundaries are from Vic Park to Markham Rd and from the lake north to Eglinton.
With Doly Begum moving from the provincial NDP to our federal Liberals, there will be a provincial by-election in Scarborough Southwest in the coming months.
To become the Liberal candidate in that by-election, we need to win a local nomination race.
It’s past time for change in Ontario. And we need your help now to deliver that change.
It starts in our east end, with a provincial Liberal nomination in Scarborough Southwest.
Here’s how it will work and how you can help:
Safety. Dignity. Stability.
Aurora House provides lifesaving support, ensuring women and children fleeing violence have a safe and dignified place to rebuild their lives.
Let's step up to support this work in our east end: www.aurorahouse.ca
