Today I had the privilege of meeting Volker Türk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. We discussed urgent human rights concerns across the Middle East, particularly in Palestine and Iran as well as ongoing crises in Sudan, Ukraine, Kashmir, Western Sahara, Tigray, Haiti, and West Papua.

There have been numerous episodes of ecocide in Ukraine carried out by Russia. It is clear to me that, within the framework of the International Criminal Court, ecocide should be added to the existing classifications of crimes.

The last part of the thread says what I’m doing about it, but do I think it’s important to communicate to my constituents what my stance is on these matters as well as taking action

I have raised my concerns for this today with Ruvendrini Menikdiwela, Assistant High Commissioner for Protection within the UNHCR, and will continue to raise this in my role on the Joint Committee on Human Rights.

This policy will cause monumental harm to refugees trying to integrate into our communities, and I am concerned that it dishonours our obligations under the Refugee Convention.

I am immensely disappointed that the Government has today scrapped permanent refugee status. Refugees will now face reviews every 30 months and be forced to return if their country is deemed 'safe'.

We know that countries listed as 'safe' aren't safe for everybody, particularly LGBTQ+ refugees.

We are in a hybrid war with Russia already. Putin is trying to erode our democracy on home soil. Russian interference in UK politics is here. If we do not resist, act and legislate now, how can we ever expect to be rid of Putin’s influence and to live in a legitimate democracy?

This isn’t a war about territory. Russia is already by far the largest country in the world with vast swathes of unpopulated land, but this is a war about autocracy crushing democracy. This is a war we cannot afford to lose.

I’ve met the bravest people I’ve ever encountered, determined to hold fort and not flee their cities, as they feel that allows Putin to pave his way through. This determination has cost thousands their lives.

I have personally visited Ukraine a number of times since the war began, arranging aid convoys and parliamentary delegations. On every occasion, there are new horrors of Russia’s violent destruction of homes, cars, landscapes, torn apart by drones and shells.

Today is 1,462 days since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Twelve years since Russia’s invasion of Crimea, which many would say was when the war truly began. Years of Ukrainian endurance and resilience, defending Europe’s frontier.

The UN Tax Convention is a crucial opportunity for the UK to raise billions in revenue, and reinstate its role and responsibility as a global leader in tackling international tax abuse. #MakePollutersPay

This marks a major step forward for workers’ rights. Unions can now spend more time fighting for better jobs, better pay, and better conditions - after most of the Tories’ Trade Union Act is repealed. 📝❌🌹✊

There’s still more to do, but this LGBTQ+ History Month reminds us that, together, we can draw inspiration from the past to build a fairer, kinder society where everyone feels safe, seen and valued for who they are.

I was truly honoured to receive the
@coopparty.party.coop Parliamentary Ally award. Equality and dignity should never be optional extras, they are fundamental rights.

It's a very important time of year for many communities in Leeds.

Leeds has the highest neonatal mortality rate in the UK, 70% higher than the average rate for comparable NHS trusts.

This is not an issue for individual maternity units. This should be taken on by the chief executive and those at the highest level in teaching hospitals.

There is an inherent issue of fairness in retrospectively making changes for Indefinite Leave to Remain from a five-year to a ten-year programme. At the very least, the Government should have transitional protections.
