Tell me about the ICON conference?
Is vending the Roadshow a good networking opportunity?
Is there a genre art presence?
It’s in Baltimore this summer so I figured I’d go, but I’m a bit gobsmacked by the pricing. No day passes and the $500+ fee doesn’t include workshops or portfolio reviews.

I have a Rollo and it’s great! No problems.
Wish I’d gotten it sooner. Way faster and cheaper than running label paper through my regular printer like I’d been doing for a long time.

Watercolor illustration. A young woman with short blond hair and red blotchy facial birthmarks in a button down shirt, jeans, and suspenders attacks a shadowy figure with light coming from her hand. In the background a large bearded man in overalls with a beat up face reaches out in surprise.
Another illustration preview from the @midworldpress.bsky.social edition of Revelator by @darylwriterguy.bsky.social ! Soon, soon.

Watercolor painting of a white haired older man on a large shiny motorcycle, with a dramatic red background. He’s wearing a leather jacket and holding sunglasses.
My second watercolor portrait commission for a great local family. Mr. Bill wanted a portrait with his beloved motorcycle before selling it. We met over the summer to take photos for the project. Painting the bike was more complex than I expected but a fun challenge and quite meditative.

Watercolor poster illustration that reads “SEND HELP, Now Playing.” The art shows a gigantic tearful eye looming over a stormy ocean. The tears merge with the waves of the ocean. In the reflection of the eye is a leaping female figure holding a spear.
Excited to reveal this project I did for SEND HELP, directed by Sam Raimi and starring Rachel McAdams & Dylan O’Brien, now in theaters! My illustration was painted traditionally in watercolor. Many thanks to @20thcenturystudios.bsky.social and @posterposse.bsky.social for this opportunity!

Watercolor illustration of three different hands against a murky green background. One hand is a child's holding a yellow trillium flower in an open palm. One hand is a young woman's crushing the same kind of flower in a fist. The third hand is an old woman's holding a withered, rotting flower. All three hands also have similar large reddish patchy birth marks on the skin.
A while ago I had the pleasure of creating illustrations for the @midworldpress.bsky.social edition of Revelator by @darylwriterguy.bsky.social. Wanted to pass on this teaser of the signature page art that Midworld shared in a recent newsletter! I'm excited to reveal more art in the coming months.

"Rising Tide," a watercolor painting of a raft of otters floating in a starry galaxy.
Excited to be returning to the #anthrocon Dealer's Den in Pittsburgh in July!
I may try to do a few watercolor badge commissions this time around. I might be reaching out to see if I can find a few volunteer guinea pigs to help me practice that process, since it's new to me.

Illustration of the statue of Liberty raising an arm above her head. The flaming torch in her hand is melting the word ICE over her. Text reads Abolish ICE
Solidarity for Minnesota and their general strike today.
It's incredibly inspiring seeing the community and mutual aid that's come together there.

Watercolor illustration of a looming monstrous face with sharp teeth forming from clouds in a dark sky, threatening to devour a tiny ship on a stormy sea.
Watercolor illustration of an anguished person standing in an eerie barren landscape with a green starry sky. One scraggly tree is behind them, with a skeleton and a grave buried inside the trunk of the tree. There is an owl in the tree.
Watercolor illustration of a haunting woman wearing a lover's eye locket overlaid with a spooky house.
Watercolor illustration in a limited palette of red and greyscale of a wise woman with horns, an older tiefling wizard, looking at you over her glasses with a symbolic cloud of books and tools emerging from her head.

Nothing quite like the little thrill that comes with going down a weird rabbit hole, requesting way too many books from the library, getting a notice that your interesting books are ready for pickup, and then taking home your big shiny pile of books to peruse. Guilt free knowledge shopping spree!

We did weird projects like research an endangered animal and then design a scale model zoo exhibit for it, debate a controversial topic in teams, learn about the Lizzie Borden trial and discuss if she was guilty or not, invent a product and create a commercial for it. And of course logic puzzles.

Oh yeah- you mean a “gifted” program? Ours wasn’t off campus, but we had one in elementary and middle school. First they called it “MASP” (more able student program) and then they changed it to “Wings” because I guess that sounded less obnoxious. Do they still do that stuff? I was born in 1984.

As we enter the New Year remember fear of making bad art is holding you back. Fear of people not liking your work is holding you back. Rejection is holding you back
You'll make bad art, you'll have people not like your work, and you'll be rejected. Moving past it is half the job of being a creative

Just a little reminder about these. I've resumed shipping, and my "leaving soon" prints will be available through January 1 (or, you know, whenever I have the wherewithal to take the listings down after the New Year's holiday...)

The week of Christmas, there should be a store krampus monitoring the baking aisle, to swat the assisting spouses who enter the already massively crowded aisle with a cart and then stand with it like a lump on their phones.

3rd spread of The Nutcracker, illustrated by me, published by Walker Books, 2015.
Ink, watercolour, and gouache on Arches hot pressed paper.
Silhouette illustration with elements in colour. Beneath the boughs of the Christmas tree, from which swing gingerbread men with swords, the Nutcracker Prince, in red coat and white sash, sword drawn, and accompanied by Clara, leads the charge of the toy soldiers. Facing them at the foot of the staircase is the Mouse King in golden crown and his mice troops.
Leading the charge was a fearsome Mouse King with a golden crown. "Get the sweets!" he ordered. "I'll take care of the girl."
"Not so fast," came a voice. Clara turned to see her nutcracker. Behind him were toy soldiers, gingerbread men & dolls, ready to fight. 3/

A possibly ephemeral lion encircles and older man, who bares his throat submissively to the lion. The lion has its teeth in the man's neck and its claws digging into the man's chest and shoulder; the man raises his hand up to caress the lion's mane.
Calling this done because if I don't I'll keep fussing with the details forever and it's driving me crazy. 😅
