I genuinely don't know if DHS policies will be any different under Mullin (if confirmed). As long as Stephen Miller is calling the shots, I don't expect a big difference.

Kristi Noem has done a stunning amount of damage and it’s good she’s gone.
But this doesn’t change the fact that we need a complete overhaul of DHS, impartial investigations into the killings of two American citizens, and information on children that were taken from Minnesota.
Noem is out largely due to massive public activism, especially in MN, Democrats expressing increasing interest in impeachment and investigations, and resulting media coverage.
Keep pushing. These people are not invincible or immune from public opinion.

Fetterman is basically a reactionary now: there is no real effort to explain why Mullin - a buffoon who spent the week insisting we are not at war with Iran - is qualified. Trump nominated Mullin, and that’s good enough for him.

Democrats may not be able to prevent Mullin's confirmation, but they can certainly turn his track record of offense and stupidity into two days of televised humiliation so spectacular that he is wounded in Trump's eyes from day 1. That is the job.

Moral of the story? Congressional oversight matters. Congress should do it more.
Also, Trump can’t install a new DHS secretary via Truth Social. Any nominee must go through Senate confirmation and Congress must deliver real guardrails to protect our communities. Senators know what happens when they confirm a dangerous DHS secretary — any nominee can’t dodge public scrutiny.
Regardless of who Trump puts in charge of DHS, Congress needs to act immediately to protect our communities from the brutality of ICE and Border Patrol. The current violence and terror machine within DHS cannot be allowed to continue. We must tear this agency down to the studs.
We’re glad that Kristi Noem has been fired and she should face real accountability for DHS’ rampant violence.
But Noem’s firing doesn’t suddenly solve the crisis at DHS. Swapping personnel without changing course is not accountability — it’s a spin tactic. What we really need is structural change.
