Nah, not strange. Pickling literally injects different flavors into the cucumber. Cucumbers on their own I have always found to be slightly bitter

Yes. I think they just generally considered them as their own plant, that has clearly been processed in some way.

In the same vein,

Raisins are grapes,

Prunes are plums,

chipotle peppers are jalapeños,

coriander and cilantro are the same plant,

and "chips" are usually potatoes or corn.

I've met too many people (adults) who didn't know that pickles are cucumbers.

(Where I'm from, we refer to pickled cucumbers generally as "pickles". Pickling is a process using vinegar and salt to preserve foods. Many foods can be pickled)
