Also the time commitment to really get into a game is a lot more than, say, giving a new album a quick listen, watching the pilto of a TV show, or even enjoying a whole movie (books are different)
I think it's because, in living memory, there were literally only a few hundred games released each year. You couldn't play them all, but you could know about all of them with a little bit of effort
