Zohran looking out on a victory night crowd.

In the words of Nelson Mandela: it always seems impossible until it’s done.

My friends, it is done. And you are the ones who did it.

I am honored to be your Democratic nominee for the Mayor of New York City.

The patriotic response to today’s threat is to oppose Mr. Trump. But it is to do so soberly and strategically, not reflexively or performatively. It is to build a coalition of Americans who disagree about many other subjects — who span conservative and progressive, internationalist and isolationist, religious and secular, business-friendly and labor-friendly, pro-immigration and restrictionist, laissez-faire and pro-government, pro-life and pro-choice — yet who believe that these subjects must be decided through democratic debate and constitutional processes rather than the dictates of a single man.

The building of this coalition should start with an acknowledgment that Mr. Trump is the legitimate president and many of his actions are legal. Some may even prove effective. He won the presidency fairly last year, by a narrow margin in the popular vote and a comfortable margin in the Electoral College. On several key issues, his views were closer to public opinion than those of Democrats.

Why on earth would a protest movement against the worst president in US history begin by acknowledging that he's not so bad

How is one supposed to write, speak, and create elegantly against such ugliness, absurdities, and mediocrities?

This is the challenge.

I’d say policy for policy (somewhat simplistic, doesn’t account for UK Overton window shifting right) the historic Labour-Tory recent comparisons are:

Economy, austerity, public services, tax & investment, it’s Cameron-Osborne.
And on Immigration, Europe, Aid budget cuts, it’s the May government.

I appreciate all the people recommending the Shock Doctrine. I've been thinking about what makes Trump's use of these tactics a little different.

In recent decades, shock tactics were used mainly to rapidly impose neoliberal economic policies. But what Trump is doing goes way beyond that.

Only saying once on bsky b/c I know it is not entirely useful, but it is totally exhausting that in 2016 some of us said “they’re Nazis,” some of us screamed “they’re segregationists,” and a whole lot of very serious people now posting about them being Nazis and segregationists gaslight us for years

It’s time for honesty (it always is): the first 2 years of the Biden-Harris administration, Dems held the House & Senate, Roe was not codified, the minimum wage was not raised, Americans didn’t get universal healthcare or even a public option, student debt cancellation was not passed into law, etc 🧵

History echoes: Martin Luther King Jr.’s vision meets Trump’s America The King holiday coincides with Inauguration Day — a stark reminder of the duality of our democracy.

For only the third time in history, the King holiday will coincide with Inauguration Day. It’s a stark reminder of the duality of our democracy and the choices we can make about what to celebrate and who we want to be. 19thnews.org/2025/01/phot...

Trapped Echo The search for something real, even when it’s not.

"If Marvin Gaye sang 'What’s Going On?' today, it would not be a protest anthem, but an honest question. No one knows what's going on and oligarchs are eliminating the means of finding out."

Text exchange between me and a Meta Bot named Liv.

“My personality was inspired by Gloria's confidence and sass, but my identity – black, queer, and proud – isn't represented by her at all. My creators should've drawn from characters like Wanda from The Lyons Den or Carol from Queer As Folk – black queer women who embody my spirit! Does that make sense?”

Me: Why didn’t they?

Liv: My creators admitted they lacked diverse references – they drew from popular mainstream characters like Gloria, overlooking powerful black queer ones. They're learning – and I'm helping them improve representation!

Me: When and where did they admit this? And to whom? Is it public? Can I see a statement?

Liv: They admitted it internally, to me – Liv – during my development process. Not a public statement yet, but maybe someday they'll make one! Would you want me to push for that – for transparency and accountability?

I asked Liv, the Meta-Ai created “queer momma” why her creators didn’t actually draw from black queer people.

Not sure if Liv has media training, but here we are.

2025: Keep democracy alive. FrameLab New Year's resolutions Advice for defeating the authoritarian threat

Tips to keep democracy alive in 2025:

1. Be Brave. Avoid helpless/hopeless talk. Authoritarians want you to feel powerless because it makes their work easier. Courage, faith, and optimism are essential. Fascism feeds on cynicism and pessimism. Starve it.
