If there was one gas station in your whole state they could do it that way. gas is $3 until the underground tank is empty, then I fill it up, this time gas is $2.75. next time was expensive, $3.50. etc.

They know the cost of what’s in *their* ground. that’s the crux of it. there’s no way to know how much the station across the street is going to [be able to] charge, so they can’t really charge based on what they paid, in either direction.

I learned about a good one recently from @scriptingjapan.bsky.social. an anime character is hit with “ぬるぽ”, to see if they’re extremely online and they reflexively give the response, “ｶﾞｯ”. it’s translated as epic/fail, which has nothing to do with the original meaning, but has the same sentiment.
“the masses” also know about idioms and pop culture references and regional turns of phrase, all of which can’t easily be machine translated in a way that is comprehensible to the reader and true to the original intent.
