Shane Koyczan • • 2d • S Small Town (For the community of Tumbler Ridge) Grief in a small town has no corners to hide in it sits at every kitchen table like the last slice of something that everyone has suddenly lost their appetites for the first siren must have sounded like a mistake the others were a cacophony a smashed piggy bank where the coins all shone like stunned eyes looking for a reason why as if even the most concise answer could make anyone understand even time seems to bow under the weight of children's names spoken in past tense small towns endure a lot they feel the slow ache of industries leaving
so their strength comes from each other from everyone knowing everyone else they will remember the student who always brought extra pencils in case a classmate needed one the parent who braided their child's hair for the last time that morning they will remember in the way they refuse to let this be the loudest thing about them or the big thing that defines the small town they all love.
Shane Koyczan is one of Canada’s most celebrated poets and spoken word artists.
He wrote this for Tumbler Ridge this week. Beautiful.

The response to the #TumblerRidgeShooting from far-right media, online commentators and even an elected official in Canada is another dark example of how pervasive anti-trans misinformation has become, even in Canada.
