I bought one of these little hardware testers and it's super handy for that exact purpose

Well what the heck, that was delightful.

Yeah that's looks reasonably beefy :)

On my Christmas list was a stick of 32 GB DDR5 with "only buy if under Β£x" because it had been fluctuating a teeny bit over the summer. πŸ’€

TrueNAS is Debian-based these days, but I'm trying to avoid using the NAS as anything other than an appliance...

What sort of build did you do?

I just set up a Terramaster F4-425 Plus with TrueNAS, coming from an old Synology DS-216+II and ... I'm not yet totally happy? Still really tempted to just blow it away and install NixOS.

Okay, I dumped 50 GB of photos into self-hosted Ente and Immich over the weekend, and so far they're both absolutely Good Enough. Honestly don't know which one I'll stick with, but I will keep one of them.

I am missing Mastodon's edit feature, though. (Sorry for the notification spam as I deleted and reposted to fix typos!)

How did that compare to your expectations for each platform?

(I'd wager that both seem low?)

I've noticed that my own desire to engage on social media flatlined a few years ago, doubly so on public platforms. It still feels like something is missing, but I haven't been able to fill that void.

I'm expecting to give it a go some time this year, but haven't gotten around to it yet. If you get there before me, let me know what you think

For more "generally interesting" stuff, @reckless.bsky.social is a stupendously skilled interviewer, and his Decoder podcast is a solid choice: www.theverge.com/decoder-podc...

For consumer tech, The Vergecast is good (but publishes quite frequently): www.theverge.com/the-vergecast

I've been consistently and pleasantly surprised by Developer Voices: pod.link/developer-vo....

CoRecursive is also good: corecursive.com

It's been 10 months since I bought my Framework 16. I still haven't finished installing Linux on it.

The second two books will do the same to you! Quite distinct from the first two, but also good.

It's not epic fantasy, but I'll always recommend Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer as a good / weird / disquieting read.

Or for classic sci-fi/fantasy, I recently really enjoyed Dan Simmons's Hyperion Cantos.

The self-encrypting drive is fun. On my previous laptop I was happy enough to manually unlock it in a PBA image. But if I can use the TPM to do it for me...

(The previous laptop also needed a patched sedutil to support resuming from s3 sleep, but now everything is s0ix, so at least that's over?)

The last two months were bisecting the kernel due to a regression in MediaTek firmware that caused failures resuming from hibernation.

Had to stop my months-long bcachefs experiment to do the bisecting, because it changed its on-disk format across the same range of kernel commits as the regression.

Who needs arts, entertainment, or hobbies when you have #NixOS?

I've had my Framework 16 for 10 months. I still haven't "finished" installing Linux on it. This month's time sink: Using LUKS2 to configure a TCG Opal Self-Encrypting Drive and have it auto-unlock via TPM2 (protected by SecureBoot.)

Let me know what you find out?

Is this going to autopopulate there, too? Those unanswered interactions are going to be something special.
