An old reel to reel magnetic tape. It has a label, in Jay Lepreau's handwriting, proclaiming it to be "UNIX Original from Bell Labs v4 (see manual for fmt)"

While cleaning a storage room, our staff found this tape containing #UNIX v4 from Bell Labs, circa 1973

Apparently no other complete copies are known to exist: https://gunkies.org/wiki/UNIX_Fourth_Edition

We have arranged to deliver it to the Computer History Museum

This is hilarious! I saw my name and email address in the author annotation on a Symfony HttpKernel exception class, and I wasn’t sure why it was there, so I traced it back to a commit I made back in 2012, which I have no recollection of. πŸ˜… […]

@kyleford @jalefkowit This is also very enlightening:

β€œDirected, in the case of Jedi, means Marquand sat in the director’s chair. What else it means, is unclear. [Marquand] otherwise deferred to Lucas, who directed as producer.”

Lucas finally understood what Lynch was telling him:

Adam Golaski On David Lynch's "Revenge of the Jedi" β€” Bennington Review ADAM GOLASKI is the author of Color Plates. His work has appeared in 1913: A Journal of Forms, Best Horror of the Year, The Lifted Brow, and LVNG no. 11.

@kyleford @jalefkowit > By ’81 for instance, Terry Gilliam had directed only one film, the fantasy comedy Jabberwocky (’77) (Time Bandits was released in November of ’81, six months after Lucas chose David Lynch for Revenge of the Jedi).

He had also co-directed Monty Python and the Holy Grail […]

This case shows how Open Source will die. With anyone just being able to pipe existing code and tests through an LLM and claiming that to be "clean room" (which is hogwash) no licensing can protect your work from being accumulated and monetized by anyone. The commons are actively being shredded […]

@glyph @benjamineskola Part snark, part honest question:

Does it really matter what the code looks like or how it’s organized when machines are the ones reading and writing the code?

@glyph @benjamineskola I think a third thing (and the way I use them) is that code reviews are for teaching and steering. Especially on a legacy code base that’s being slowly modernized, I’ll leave tips and hints on ways to improve the code instead of following the old anti-patterns around it […]

@ramsey Yeah, I’ve noticed a distinct drop in quality since coworkers started using LLMs.
