If you find the larger clip and read or listen to it, in the context this makes more sense - it doesn't seem like he is making that assumption.

My great-grandmother, who I knew personally and was alive until I was 25, was born to a woman who was born enslaved. My mother grew up in the Jim Crow south, and personally experienced segregation. My dad as a young lawyer in NY would not be hired by a law firm. It was not that long ago.
I don't know whether he was outright murdered, encouraged to kill himself, or given the opportunity to kill himself, but it was definitely something in that spectrum. Way too convenient for him to be dead.
